"As for God His way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried; He is a shield to all those who take refuge in Him." Ps 18:30
I was introduced to this verse at a time in my life when I was around 14 or 15 years old. My life was upside down in such a way that a 15 year old should not experience. It was a scary time. It was an uncertain time and it was a testing time for me. But, God was there!
I can remember sitting at the table with my pastor at the time, and he shared this verse with me. Although I did not understand it completely,it became life to me. It is one of my early memory verses, and the Lord still brings it to memory all these years later when I need to be reminded of its truths.
I love it in the New Living Translation: "God's way is perfect. All the Lord's promises are true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection."
We know that the word "Psalm" means "Praise." I find it interesting the Psalmist starts this verse out by going to the source of ALL blessings: GOD. AS FOR GOD. It reflects to the charachter of God. I love that.
"His way is PERFECT." I did NOT understand that as a 15year old. All I knew at that time was to trust God - that HIS WAY WAS BETTER THAN WORLDS WAY. I had no idea what His way was (Ha), but I began seeking and learning HIS WAY. I had to learn early to submit to a God I was just getting to know. I chose to trust a God that I physically could not see. I had to believe in His word that I barely knew!
I grew up in a destructive home. My childhood years was far from "perfect." I learned at a young age what living life outside of God's way was like by watching others around me. And I knew I did not want it. God was so good to me to implant truth into my heart so early in life. I chose to believe that His simple promise of HIS WAY was PERFECT somehow involved me. I had to walk by faith - not by sight - because I did not have godly influence within my family unit.
"The word of the Lord is tried? What does that mean? I can remember lying in my bed at night repeating this verse to myself, and I would think, "What in the world does that mean?" The only conculsion that I could come to terms with in my young mind was that the truths of God's word would be tested in the world that I live. And that is true. His word is tested over and over.
Remember in our last post we talked about God's word being like treasure?
This is what I am talking about. SO MUCH RICHES IN THE WORD OF GOD. This verse tells us that His word is like silver refined in the furnace. Spurgeon says it best,
Now that I am older and I have a little history with the Lord, I like David, have "tried" the Lord and found His promises have never failed. God and His word is sweeter than honey, and a balm to my soul.
I may not know exactly what you are facing in your own life. God does. This last part of our verse is the crowing jewel of our treasure. He is our shield. He is our protector. To those WHO TRUST IN HIM. In nothing else, ladies. I was forced at a young age to wrestle with the promises of God's word and to put my trust in HIM ALONE.
This morning as I was brushing my teeth, I thought of each of you (I know weird!). I remembered this verse and began praying that God would be "AS FOR GOD" to you. The Alpha and the Omega. That He would be your "YAHWEH SHALOM" - The Lord of Peace. He is "YAHWEH ROPHE" - The Lord who Heals. He is our rock. Our salvation. Our master. Lord. Our comfort. The provider. He is everlasting. The God who sees. Hope. A Dwelling Place. Refuge. Shield. Fortress. The Strong Tower. GOD MOST HIGH.
If you have watched any of the news, you, like me, must be so saddened by the destruction from the tornadoes. My best friend from college was impacted from the tornadoes. She said the scariest part was when evening fell upon them, they had no power, and the 4th storm was upon them. She could do nothing but sit in total darkness, and listen to the power of the storm and she could hear tree limbs fall all around her home.
Life brings storms. Sometimes, you may feel like you are in total darkness with raging winds, thunder, hail, and falling trees all around you. Ah, God himself is the "shield" of trustful ones. Picture Christ himself walking on the stormy waters in your life with his hand outstretched to YOU! Trust. Do you trust Me? Are you willing to have My peace in the midst of your storm?
He is a personal, living God. Maybe you are new at learning God's word and applying it to your life in such a personal way. I know that all of us have lived long enough that we have learned to trust in anything else this world has to offer only brings disapointments. They leave us feeling scared and lonely.
Take this verse and make it yours. Keep digging for the treasures and riches of God.
Don't give up when you become weary, for a crown of glory is awaiting you.
Have a God-filled weekend.
Thank you! Maybe I will take this verse and make it mine! I have such a hard time finding verses that pertain to what I am going through and yours are good ones.
